Tests & Checks
Actions that test fate call for dice rolls known as checks. They are performed by rolling a d20, adding any relevant stat modifier, and comparing the result against a target number. If the check exceeds the target, the test succeeds. Checks are only called for when failure is both possible and meaningful, usually due to time pressure. No check is necessary when success is effectively assured. It is a paltry task to stab a sleeping foe or shoot a still, unaware target.
